Best Overall & Best Concept 2021

Action Dad

We wanted this Father’s Day video to be an homage to the action movies of the ’80s. A lot of inspiration came from Rambo and Terminator. It was shot primarily in our studio with a few other locations mixed in. The biggest challenge for this piece was making sure the highly stylized world and the real world scenarios were visually very obvious in what we were trying to convey.

Equipment:
Canon C200
Tokina Cinema Vista Lenses
Kessler Shuttle Dolly
Astera Titan Tubes

Dangerous Disciplines

The setup for this one was a Panasonic G85 on a DJI RS2 gimbal and a single overhead light source in the middle of our empty auditorium. We have a small creative team of about 3 people, but this shoot took place in the middle of a busy project season. So my wife & I set up the scenes and took turns behind the camera shooting these workout broll-style shots. In the end, I was pretty pumped with the result.

Church Center App

We shot this video for use in our weekend experiences with the goal of making it extremely easy and compelling for an attendee to download a new mobile app.

This one was fun to shoot for a couple of reasons. The app has a distinct color palette, so we enjoyed doing our best to match that with the lighting on set using a couple of GVM RGB fixtures. This was also our social media coordinator’s first time in front of the camera. While it took her a few extra takes, I think the final video comes across very natural.

Best Series Starter 2021

“My Secret Life”

For this video promoting our series “My Secret Life,” we were aiming for a suspense/thriller vibe. We storyboarded the sequence and then scouted for locations. The house we found was absolutely perfect and provided a great aesthetic to base our look on. We wanted the scene to take place at night, so we blacked out all the windows, added curtain sheers, and placed small lights outside to simulate moonlight. We gelled the under-cabinet kitchen lights to get a nice greenish-yellow tint to them and then supplemented that lighting with our Titan Tubes, aputure lights, and some tungsten practicals. For the staircase shots, we also utilized a steadicam to add some energy into that moment. The final shot of the piece was filmed in a large space that we constructed a doorway in to match our other location, and then we blasted light from behind to create the elongated shadow that would match our end graphic.

180º for Christ

A once drug lord, murderer, and extortionist becomes a Christian and leads a ministry inside one of the most dangerous prisons in Peru. This is a story of redemption and healing. And how the actions of one can transform an entire community!

Most of this project was shot on a gimbal with a Sony A7Sii. It was perhaps one of the most impactful and beautiful projects I’ve ever worked on.

Some of the challenges were being in an extremely dangerous area with expensive equipment. I had 2-3 people always walking with me while filming. Especially near the prison.

Talking to Carlos on the phone while in prison was one of kind experience. He was passionate and humble. I will never forget recording his voice over speaker phone and hearing his love for Jesus and the men inside the prison.

The other voices that add to this story (wife, mother, pastor, and leader) only add to the power of it. To this day this district of Peru saw its crime all time low when Carlos came to know Jesus!
