Telling Hector’s story was such an amazing story to capture because it had not been told yet and for the first time Hector’s family was going to hear never-heard-before details. Since the telling of Hector’s story, Hector has become a Media volunteer at Visalia First and now helps train other volunteers. The equipment I used on Hector’s story was a Canon 5D, Canon lenses 15mm, 24-70mm, 70-210, and a Senheisor lavalier mic, reflector for the interview and used FCX to edit.
I remember the text message I got on May 24 detailing a feature we were planning for the weekend after next. The killing of Breonna Taylor & Ahmaud Arbery was still fresh in everyone’s mind, and we wanted to craft a moment to help articulate to our congregation and our community what the God calls us to when the Scriptures speak of mourning with those who mourn, and to love justice, as clearly as we could. After almost six weeks of constant week-of projects due to Covid, it would be nice to get a chance to really dig into the…
Every year we produce a video with a re-telling of the Christmas Story. Over the years we’ve shot a few versions of kids telling the story in their own words, but this past year we wanted to introduce a new way for kids to share. We asked them to draw the Christmas story. To start each shoot, I told them they could use any of the crayons and markers and then we just let them draw whatever they wanted about the Christmas story. The original plan was to have the kids who made the drawings also read the story, but…
This was an idea we had for a couple of weeks prior to actually making it. Three of our vocalists had done an impromptu version of this just after quarantine started on Instagram where they were singing from their homes, and two weeks later we decided to try it on a larger scale. This time around, our five vocalists wrote, recorded and mixed their own tracks on a Monday. We filmed on a Tuesday in various locations at the church with a C100 mkii / sigma 18-35m combo & a single Aputure Tri-8c LED on a stand. Each singer had…
Back in the fall we decided that we wanted to put together a video that honored our volunteers—the people that make up the church, and make things happen! We realized at the beginning of the year that National Volunteer Appreciation week happens in April, so we planned to put this together around this time. Alex Schwindt really challenged us to tell a story with less narrative, which was what we wanted to accomplish in this project. As this pandemic closed things down, we had to start working with existing b-roll instead of planning to get certain shots. We felt that…
Our second attempt at a sermon series trailer. This series was for advent titled “Incarnate: Wholly God, Fully Man, Begotten not Made.” We wanted to create a sense of mystery and wonder at the incarnation of Jesus, and get congregants anticipating the unpacking of what it means to us that He was fully God and fully man. Shot on our Sony a6500, and the challenges we faced were more so in the scheduling actors and scouting locations, but a great learning process for us!
After attending Capture Summit in 2019, we were introduced to the idea of sermon series trailers. This sermon series was called “Living in Babylon: Walking with God in a godless culture” and was our first attempt at a sermon series trailer. We wanted to get the concept across that like Daniel, we are called to live in a culture, but not like a culture. We were made to stand out! Shot on our Sony a6500 on a tripod, we filmed this in a way where we could easily switch back and forth between speeding up and slowing down. Challenges were…
In 2019, we chose the sermon series title When Everything Changed for our Spring 2020 sermon series. Little did we know that COVID-19 would strike and our selected title would become so culturally relevant. When planning the series in January, we decided to create a narrative sermon series animation that was added to each week. We planned to outsource the project but found we didn’t have enough margin for an outside resource to create it. We weren’t far enough along in the process to have the materials ready to send off. So, we decided to do it in-house. All of…
This is a documentary we made celebrating the history of God’s work in our church, both historically and relationally. We shot the entire thing on a couple Sony a7sii’s and used a Magic Pro 2 for the aerials. For everything outside of the interview portions we specifically chose to shoot at focal lengths 200mm and above because we wanted to capture natural community and interaction between people without them even knowing the camera was around. The biggest challenge was how can we tell a story that spans 15 years that’s cohesive and yet still involve as much perspective as possible…
